Zejtun 1

Zejtun managed to maintain a 100% record after beating Gudja with a solitary goal.

They enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges in the first period and Gudja improved after the restart and came close to equalise on three occasions. 

Following this game Zejtun are on maximum points from 11 games while Gudja are in third position on 18 points from 10 games.

The early pressure came from Zejtun. Seciu Parnis served Juan Gatt in the area and Gudja keeper Kurt Baldacchino foiled him with a timely sortie. Bennett Schembri served Gatt with a through ball in the area but he drove over the bar. Luke Spagnol dribbled past a defender and after entering the area Baldacchino denied him with a diving save to a corner.

Josvel Spiteri then served Schembri with a square pass but he missed the upright from outside the area. Parnis freed Luca Camilleri on the right flank and his cross-shot was cleared to a corner, and from the flag kick by the same player Margeth Scicluna headed out.

Gudja created the first action in the 27th minute when Ryan De Battista served Wayne De Battista with a through ball in the area and Zejtun keeper Kurt Bonnett saved his effort.

Zejtun reacted and had the last two actions before the interval. Spiteri was fouled on the left edge of the area. Emy Camilleri floated a high ball in the area which was cleared away with difficulty. Then Schembri released Gatt on the right flank and Baldacchino neutralised the ball from his cross-shot with a diving save.

Five minutes after the resumption Zejtun were awarded a penalty. Camilleri released Spiteri on the left flank who then crossed to Scicluna in the area and after he was tripped the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Bennett Schembri took charge of the spot kick and the ball thumped the bar from his hard drive and was cleared to a corner.

Zejtun forged ahead in the 53rd minute when Luca Camilleri served Gatt with a cross from the right who after entering the area, scored with a hard low shot.

In a reaction by Gudja Bradley Cassar was fouled on the right flank, Gianluca Bonnici floated a high perfect ball in the area from the free kick and Wayne De Battista drove over the bar.

Bonnici then served the same player with a through ball in the area and Bonnett foiled with a timely sortie in two attempts.

In another action by Zejtun Gatt served Scicluna with a cross in the area and Baldacchino neutralised the ball. Substitute Yanes Bonnett was fouled on the left edge of the area and from the free kick by Schembri the ball was cleared off the line.

Gudja came close to equalise when they created the last three actions before the end. Matthew Vella dribbled past a defender on the left flank and served Wayne De Battista in the area and the ball was cleared by a defender following his shot.

The same player then served Wayne De Battista with a high through ball in the area and Bonnett had to come out of his charge and palm the ball away.

Minutes later, the same player again served De Battista with a cross in the area from the right flank and Bonnett tipped the ball over the bar from his close-range shot.
